The Boynton Beach Grab Bars blog had the opportunity to discuss with Howard Cohen, a licensed physical therapist and grab bar installation specialist for Mr. Grab Bar of Boynton Beach about where the best locations are to install grab bars to prevent falls from occurring.
In our conversation we learned that there are three locations in the bathroom that are most critical for grab bars to be placed. The most important location is a bar placed vertically at the entrance to the shower stall. This bar is to help assist with entering and exiting from the shower stall and is especially critical when the shower is located within a bathtub enclosure. Stepping over the side of a bathtub can be very dangerous because it requires balancing on one foot and makes you susceptible to a fall, especially if the floor is slippery and wet.
The next most important place is diagonally against the back wall of the shower stall to aid with bathing and going from sitting to standing and vice versa when a shower seat is used.
Lastly, a bar placed beside the toilet assists with transitioning back and forth between sitting and standing. Quite often this can be achieved with a dual-functioning grab bar that works as both a toilet paper holder and a grab bar.
